In 2008 Mike Farrell, Paul Bowdler, Paul Wood and Terry Lapping set off early doors from Zoe’s Place to embark on a 32 mile journey to Whitby. Little did they know at the time it would become a tradition for the next 10 years, what would begin as 4 friends fundraising for Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice soon turned into over 80 walkers raising over £50,000 for good causes across Teesside.

Inspiration came when Mike’s daughter Megan started to visit the hospice in 2007 for respite care. Mike and his wife understood how important the care given by the hospice was to so many families from across the North East, and decided he wanted to do something to make sure the service remained open for future families.

Now in his 10th year, Mike wants to make it extra special because after this year’s event Mike’s boots will go into retirement!

The walk will begin at the usual time of 4.30am from Whale Hill Community Centre to the beautiful seaside town of Whitby. Take in the scenery as you walk through the North Yorkshire countryside and join the Cleveland Way at Boulby Cliff for the spectacular views of the coastline. From here you will head for the harbour village of Staithes, then onto Runswick Bay heading for Sandsend and finally the finish line of Whitby Harbour where you can enjoy a well-earned rest and of course the famous fish and chips!

At the finish point there will be a warm welcome from charity representatives and the many bands that will be playing throughout the day.

Please be aware that this is a third part event not organised by Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice. Everyone who takes part does so at their own risk. It is a non-marshalled walk, you are responsible for your own health and safety and although all participants set off together it is only a matter of time before the group breaks up into smaller sections; so you need to know where you are going. The walk will take approximately 12 hours to complete and has a mixed terrain so suitable walking shoes are essential.

If you would like to take part please contact Mike via the Facebook page Zoe’s Place 10/10 Walk to Whitby. Zoe’s Place will send sponsorship forms and a t-shirt will be available for collection on the day of the event.
