The appeal to save the new home for Liverpool’s baby hospice Zoe’s Place has ended having raised a staggering £7.5m. Our original hope was that the appeal, initiated by local MP Ian Byrne, would raise £5m.
The appeal was launched after the costs of building the new hospice, required due to the end of the lease for the existing hospice building, spiralled. The sums raised are made up of £3.8m in cash including Gift Aid, and £3.7m in pledges including £2.5m from Home Bargains.
Joan Stainsby, executive trustee, said
‘The sums of money that have been raised as a result of Ian Byrne’s appeal are astonishing. The trustees feel so fortunate that the people and organisations of Liverpool and beyond have rallied behind the hospice, and that it now has a secure future.’
Ian Byrne, the MP behind the fundraising appeal, said:
‘I am staggered by the generosity of people in our city and it is only because of them that we can look to a future to provide modern facilities for children who need them. I cannot thank the people of Liverpool enough. That is the best Christmas present that I could have asked for’
The majority of the funds raised will go towards the building of a state of the art new centre for children and families in Liverpool on the site of a former bowling green at Hayman’s Green, West Derby. The remaining funds will be used to fund the operation of the Liverpool hospice.
We still, however, desperately need your support to meet the day to day running costs to ensure we can continue to provide care and support to the children and families of Liverpool into the future. In a very short time, the generous people and organisations of Liverpool and beyond have helped us raise the additional £5m needed to build a new home for Zoe’s Place Liverpool hospice and support its future operation.
As a result, we will be closing this appeal on 13th December 2024. If you have any donations still to make, we would be very grateful if you could let us have them before this date.
We, however, still need to raise funds to meet the running costs of the hospice. Doing so will ensure the families the Liverpool hospice supports can rest assured that the hospice will be there as long as they need us.

This morning [Monday 14 October], trustees from Zoe’s Place met once again with Ian Byrne MP, along with the architects Zoe’s Place commissioned to design the new building on the former bowling green site at Hayman’s Green. Joan Stainsby, executive trustee, said:

Today we met with Ian Byrne MP about the future of Zoe’s Place Liverpool. He’s put forward an unexpected yet greatly appreciated initiative to lead a £5 million fundraising drive to help keep our hospice open.

“When the trustees spoke to the team at Zoe’s Place Liverpool on Monday, just like the families we support, we had found ourselves in a position of very little hope.
“The positivity, generosity and commitment to our cause we have seen since our announcement has been both overwhelming and uplifting.
“The chances of finding an alternative home for Zoe’s Place Liverpool still seem slim. But it is heartening to know that our staff team, and the people of Liverpool, will help ensure that every possible opportunity is exhausted before we are forced to close

Zoe’s Place Liverpool had been hoping to build a new hospice near to its current location. However, the time taken to get planning permission has left insufficient time to construct the building. In addition, a significant rise in the projected costs and the challenge of raising funding in the current economic climate means there are insufficient funds available. It is therefore with great sadness that Zoe’s Place trustees have to announce that their Liverpool hospice will close at the end of 2024. With only nine months before the charity’s lease for Yew Tree Lane ends, there is insufficient time and money to relocate to a new home elsewhere.
